It’s 7:30 pm – Do you know where your school board meeting is?
I took some creative license with this saying – so hopefully I captured your attention. I often ask myself “Why more people don’t attend school board meetings?” I have yet to find a reasonable explanation, except that “time” is often a very limiting factor.
Okay, I admit that a school board meeting isn’t the most “fun thing” to do on Wednesday evening…but it does provide an opportunity for input and understanding of the important issues for our students, district and for public education. Unfortunately, “hot-button” issues should not be the only reason why you feel passionate to attend.
Whatever your role is today – student, parent, staff member or community member – I encourage you to stay informed and get involved. Be an advocate for your children, our community, and the important role that education will play in helping to shape the future.
And as school districts and board members, we need to continually leverage the ease and power of today’s technology to enhance a greater opportunity for further communication and public engagement. More ideas on this topic to follow in future posts.
So here is the 411…
Where: District Administrative Offices
When: Tonight – Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 7:30 pm
Why: Because you can TiVo American Idol…
This has been an important public service announcement…signing off.

What do you think about this… you record the meetings on video and put them online in an on-demand archive style. This way, even if people can’t make the meeting, they can still know what’s going on. They could also do research on items that are important to them. It could also get the younger generation (students and taxpayers) involved (look at the boom of online video). Thoughts?
