The Northwestern Lehigh School District has posted a copy of the 2010-2011 proposed Preliminary Budget on the website.  Although this document fulfills procedural and timeline requirements under Act 1 of 2006, its very important to remember this is still a work-in-process budget. Nothing has been set in stone yet, and everything is on the table for further discussion.

In its current form, the preliminary budget preserves the maximum amount of the adjusted ECI/SAWW tax index and the allowable exceptions under Act 1.  This provides a “ceiling” for the School Board and administration team to further evaluate all options and considerations in the budget process.  The school board is expected to take action on the preliminary budget on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 (note: change in regular meeting date).

I will post my insight and position on the preliminary budget within the next few days – and explain some of the work that is still ahead in this process from my perspective.

In the meantime, you may review the District budget document in a more user-friendly format for reading via this link.

I also quickly scanned the websites of the other eight school districts in Lehigh County.  Somewhat surprising – only East Penn, Southern Lehigh and Salisbury had copies of their 2010-2011 preliminary budgets posted in an easy-to-find location. I’m not sure the average stakeholder could easily decipher or understand a PDE-2028 budget document format, so I have to give kuddos to my home district of Northwestern Lehigh for “setting the bar” on this one!
