Recap of March 9th Board Meeting

Students from Mrs. Roman and Mrs. Fitzgerald’s 6th grade social studies classes presented multimedia projects on the U.S. Census 2010, “It’s in Our Hands.” Students created promotional items, songs, and videos to enrich their learning experience in this content area.
Everyone in attendance now has a better understanding of the importance of this national process! Look for your copy of the 2010 U.S. Census in your mailbox — please complete it and return it by April 1, 2010.
Leann Stitzel, Director of Curriculum of Technology, gave an update on the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Standards Aligned System (SAS) and the Keystone Exams. An outline of the primary provisions of the Keystone Exams follows:
Courses required for graduation:
Effective with the high school graduation class of 2014-15, school district graduation requirements must include demonstration of proficiency in literature (reading), English composition, math, science and social studies as determined by Keystone Exams (KEs) or validated local assessments.
Keystone Exams are being developed now in the following areas:
- Literature
- English Composition
- Algebra I
- Geometry
- Algebra II
- Biology
- American History
Additional Keystone Exams to be developed and implemented in 2016:
- Civics and Government
- Chemistry
- World History
The Academic Challenge Eighth (ACE) team finished 2nd place in the competition finals held on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Tamaqua Middle School. Congratulations to all ACE team members!
